I still maintain "The Long Patrol" had the saddest ending in the series; so many lives lost defending the freedom of Mossflower. But to those who grew up reading the series and loving the brave characters, it was a reminder of how the values we praised in the characters meant having to uphold them, sometimes at the cost of your life.
